You can click and drag a gem to move it, and it will swap positions with other gems along its path. But if you cannot do so, the monsters will attack you and some amount of life will be lost. The remaining amount of life will be shown in the heart-shaped indicator on the left of the play area, and when the indicator is emptied, you lose.
